SPICED CHICKPEAS BURGER

These chickpeas burger are so easy to make, they are filling and so quick to make. They are perfect midweek meal, a vegetarian option and on top of everything they are healthy. You know the things you are putting in, unlike store bought vegetarian alternatives that are high in sodium and full of preservatives.

HOW TO MAKE SPICED CHICKPEA BURGERS ?

The ingredients required for spiced chickpea burgers are very simple, you will mostly have these in your pantry and fridge.

Chickpeas – You can use canned chickpeas or boil them by soaking before hand. Just make sure they are drained well and pat them dry using paper towel. The excess moisture can make the mixture mushy and hard to hold and will result in the burgers that are soggy.

Carrot, onion, green chilli and coriander give texture and flavour to this burger.

Spices needed are red chilli powder or paprika, garlic powder, cumin powder and black pepper powder.

And you will need an egg and breadcrumbs that helps to bind the mixture together.

Put everything in a food processor. But make sure not to over process and make a paste. The mixture should be grainy and should be able to hold together. Shape the burger patty with hands. Fry them in a pan. These patties are bit fragile so don’t move them around too much, just flip them once they are done on one side.

Burger Bun -you can choose any type of bun ( hamburger, wholemeal, sourdough). I like brioche the most.

TOPPINGS FOR SPICED CHICKPEA BURGERS

For toppings I used some salad leaves, tomatoe, onion, jalepenos.

You can choose to add any toppings of your choice. Salad leaves or lettuce, cheese, avocadoes, beetroot, cucumbers, pickles, essentially anything you like in your burger . Choose your favourite sauce, I used chilli sauce and mayonnaise.

FREEZING OPTION

These burgers patties are perfect for freezing and are very handy option for lunch. Just fry them and put them in a freezer safe container. When required, thaw them slightly and heat them in microwave or in a pan.

Ingredients
  

  • 500 g Chickpeas Boiled or canned
  • 1 cup grated Carrot
  • 1 Cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Small Onion
  • 1 cup Coriander/Cilantro chopped
  • 1 Green Chilli Optional
  • tsp Salt
  • tsp Red Chilli Powder/Paprika
  • ½ tsp Blackpepper powder
  • ½ tsp Garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Cumin Powder
  • 3 tbsp oil for frying
  • 6 Burger Buns

Toppings

  • Mix Salad Leaves
  • Sliced Tomatoe
  • Slices Onions
  • Jalapenos
  • Mayonnaise
  • Chilli Sauce

Instructions
 

  • In a food processor combine chickpeas and all the ingredients. Process until mixture is formed but it should be still grainy.
  • Form 6 patties, make sure there are no cracks.
  • Fry them in oil, turning them once done on one side.
  • Toast the burgers slightly in the same pan.
  • Assemble them in burger with choice of your toppings and sauces.
