Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients In Cinnamon Rolls

There are 3 parts to this recipe. The dough, the filling the that delicious cream cheese icing

DOUGH:

Instant yeast – I use instant yeast so it doesn’t require to be proofed.

Milk – make sure the milk is lukewarm.

Caster Sugar

Butter – Unsalted, melted and cooled down.

Salt – a bit of salt in baked goods, brings out all the flavors.

Eggs – Use large eggs at room temperature.

Flour – I used all-purpose flour for this.

FILLING:

Brown sugar – I prefer to use dark brown sugar.

Cinnamon – Of course you need cinnamon for cinnamon rolls

Butter – unsalted again. You’ll want to make sure this is softened. Margarine can be used as well.

CREAM CHEESE ICING:

Butter – unsalted softened butter.

Powdered sugar – this is also known as icing sugar or confectioner’s sugar.

Cream cheese – at room temperature. You can use light or low fat cream cheese too.

Milk – a dash of milk. I like to add some to make my frosting runny so it runs into the cinnamon rolla, making them gooey !

How To Make Cinnamon Rolls

Mix Wet Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, add eggs, melted butter, warm milk and yeast. Using a whosk untill well combined.

Make the dough: Add dry ingridients i.e flour, sugar and salt. Using a spatula or wooden spoon mix until it comes together. Dust a clean surface with some flour and transfer the mixture on to it. Knead the dough until its smooth. You can also make the dough in stand mixer. Place the dough into an oiled bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size. I usually heat oven to 100 C for few minutes and turn it off. Then I put my dough in it. It gives perfect warm place for it to rise and it takes less than a hour.

Prepare filling: Combine the brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

Assemble cinnamon rolls: Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface, until it is approximately 16 inches long by 12 inches wide. It should be approximately 1/4 inch in thickness. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough and then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar evenly over the surface of the dough. Roll the dough down making it into a log shape Cut the dough into 2 inch slices, and place in a lightly greased baking pan. I use floss to cut into slices,it cuts it very clean and even. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let them rise for another 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.

Bake the cinnamon rolls: Bake them in a preheated 160 C/350 F degree oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown. If they are turning brown too quickly cover the tray lightly with the foil.

Make icing: While the rolls are baking make the icing by mixing all the icing ingredients and beat well with an electric mixer until fluffy and smooth. Spread the icing over the warm cinnamon rolls.

Cinnamon Roll Recipe Tips

  • Make sure the milk is luke warm. The milk shouldn’t be hot or cold, it should be just the right temperature so that the yeast to work.
  • Let the dough rise somewhere warm. Yeast responds to warmth, so, for dough to rise properly place it somewhere warm. A warm sunny spot near the window is an ideal place. I usually heat oven to 100 C for few minutes and turn it off. Then I put my dough in it. It gives perfect warm place for it to rise and it takes less than a hour.
  • Add the glaze when the rolls are still warm, but not hot. If the rolls are too hot when you add the glaze, it will melt. Its best to spread icing when they are warm.
